It’s been a few months since my last post. The middle of the year brought a whirlwind of testing, and then the holidays arrived, offering a much-needed pause. Now that the winter break is behind us, it feels like the perfect moment to get back into the rhythm of teaching and learning. This post shares how I’ve reignited my passion for education, the professional development that sparked fresh energy, and the new semester ahead at UCF for my Educational Leadership studies.
The IGNITE Conference
Returning from a two-week winter break can feel like starting from scratch. To jumpstart the new year, our school organized a mini-conference style professional development (PD) day for our region of the district. The idea was to create an engaging, out-of-this-world experience that would inspire educators to think differently about their work.
I had the opportunity to lead sessions focused on collecting, analyzing, and transforming data into actionable plans—all within the same day. This approach allows us to provide timely feedback and implement just-in-time interventions for students.
Part of the session was dedicated to providing teachers with an opportunity for practice. Teachers were given a set of sample student responses to sort and develop a small group intervention focus based on the group needs within a five-minute time period. For example, after analyzing recent assessment data, teachers could immediately adjust their lesson plans or groupings to better support learners who needed extra help. This hands-on practice not only reinforced their learning but also empowered them to make data-driven decisions in real-time.

The space theme wasn’t just for fun. It symbolized exploration and discovery, reminding us that education is a journey into the unknown where curiosity drives growth. The energy in the room was palpable, and I left feeling recharged and ready to tackle the semester ahead.

New Semester at UCF: Building Leadership Skills
This semester, I’m enrolled in two courses as part of my Educational Leadership program at UCF: Clinical Supervision and Financial Affairs and Human Resources. Both classes are designed to deepen my understanding of school leadership from different angles.
Setting Clear Goals for Growth
I’ve set specific goals to guide my learning this semester:

Use the Marzano Framework effectively to coach teachers during a mock observation cycle. This framework, adopted by our district, emphasizes clear
teaching elements and measurable outcomes. Practicing coaching with this tool will help me support teachers more confidently.
Improve our current Professional Learning Team (PLT) by integrating new tools and coaching techniques. I want to help create a safe and collaborative environment where teachers feel supported and motivated to grow.
Gain a solid grasp of school funding and financial management from an administrative perspective. Understanding how budgets work is crucial for making informed decisions that impact students and staff.
Build a practical toolkit for managing finances and human resources as an assistant principal. This includes learning strategies for hiring, staff development, and resource allocation.
These goals reflect my commitment to becoming a well-rounded leader who can support both teachers and students effectively.
Balancing Dedication and Excitement for the Semester Ahead
I know this semester will demand dedication and grit. Balancing coursework, professional responsibilities, and personal life is always a challenge. Yet, I’m excited about the opportunities to learn and grow. Each class and PD session brings new insights that I can apply directly to my work in schools. If you're looking for tips on managing these demands, be sure to check out my previous blog post on balancing work, school, and life by clicking the button below.
For example, understanding financial affairs will help me advocate for resources that support student success. Coaching teachers using the Marzano Framework will improve classroom instruction and student outcomes. These practical skills make the hard work worthwhile.
I encourage fellow educators and administrators to find ways to reignite their passion after breaks. Whether through professional development, setting new goals, or simply reflecting on your purpose, these steps can help you return to your work with fresh energy and focus.
The new semester is a chance to reset and move forward with intention. By embracing learning opportunities and staying connected to our purpose, we can make a meaningful difference in our schools. Let’s keep the momentum going and support each other on this journey.
